worldfactbook.io vs The Old CIA Factbook: An Honest Comparison

We built worldfactbook.io after the CIA Factbook was shut down in February 2026. It felt wrong to just say "use the Internet Archive" when the whole point of the Factbook was current data.

But I want to be honest rather than just claim we're better at everything. We're not. Here's a real breakdown.

What the CIA Factbook did well

Authority. When the CIA says a country has X population or Y GDP, people trust that. Institutional weight a community-built replacement doesn't automatically inherit.

Narrative content. The written sections — introductions, geography notes, historical context — were actually well-written. CIA officers contributed field photos. There was a distinctive editorial voice you can't replicate with a database.

Consistency over time. 36 years of data, same structure, updated weekly. That longitudinal consistency was enormously useful for researchers.

Where w already better

Data freshness. The CIA Factbook updated weekly but its underlying economic data was often 1-2 years old because that's how long official statistics take to publish. We pull from World Bank, IMF, and UN APIs directly — same sources, but we show you when data was last updated and from which source.

More indicators. The Factbook tracked around 200 indicators per country. We're at 1,400+. That includes Freedom House democracy scores, Transparency International corruption index, and HDI rankings the CIA never included.

Free API. The original had no API. You could download a ZIP file but there was no programmatic way to query it. We have a REST API at /api/v1/countries/ that returns clean JSON. No key required.

Country comparison tool. Side-by-side comparison of any 2-4 countries across all indicators. The CIA site had no way to do this.

Mobile. The CIA site was genuinely terrible on mobile. Ours is designed mobile-first.

Where we're still catching up

The writtenarrative sections. The CIA's country introductions were genuinely good — written by actual analysts. Ours are AI-generated summaries still rolling out. Decent but not the same depth.

We're also missing some obscure data points — runway lengths at every airport, detailed port infrastructure, granular military logistics data that isn't available through open APIs.

Bottom line

For historical data or narrative depth — Internet Archive versions of the CIA Factbook are still better.

For current data, API access, comparison tools, or just a working website — worldfactbook.io is more useful right now.

We're not trying to be a perfect replica. We're trying to be a better version of what the Factbook was trying to do, built on open data sources that can't be shut down by a government directive.

Free Country Data API in 2026: What's Available and How to Use It

When the CIA World Factbook shut down in February 2026, it took with it one of the few places you could get comprehensive country data in a structured, downloadable format. The Factbook had a bulk download but never actually offered an API.

So what are your options now if you need country data programmatically?

What you actually need first

"Country data" covers a wide range:

• Basic facts — capital, area, languages, currency, ISO codes
• Demographics — popn, age structure, birth/death rates
• Economics — GDP, inflation, unemployment, trade
• Governance — government type, democracy index, corruption scores
• Geography — borders, terrain, climate, natural resources

Most APIs cover one or two categories well. Very few cover all of them.

No key. No rate limiting (be reasonable). CORS enabled.

REST Countries (restcountries.com)

Great for basic metadata — ISO codes, flags, currenuages. Doesn't have economic data.

Free, well-maintained, been around for years.

World Bank API

Gold standard for economic data. Awkward to use but comprehensive.

You need to know indicator codes which takes getting used to. Free, no key required.

UN Data API

Good for demographic and social indicators — HDI, gender equality, education metrics. More complex than World Bank.

Quick comparison

My recommendation

For most use cases — a project, dashboard, research tool — the worldfactbook.io API gets you 80% of the waycent economic data, layer in the World Bank API on top.

The REST Countries API is worth adding for metadata like ISO codes and flag SVGs — incredibly reliable and has been around forever.
